Chlorine is essential for keeping your pool clean and hygienic and having an efficient and effective way to dispense chlorine is highly important. There are plenty of products on the market to help you do this, but some of the most common options also come with drawbacks.
In this blog post, we take a look at some of the most common types of automatic chlorine dispensers, as well as the Hanna BL121 Chlorine Controller.
Automatic chlorine dispensers are devices which utilise Chlorine tablets to gradually dose a pool with Chlorine. They might take the form of a floating dispenser or might be plumbed directly into your pool’s pump and filter system.
Whilst an automatic chlorine dispenser might seem like a stress-free way to keep your pool clean, they do come with some disadvantages. Chlorine dispensers do not alter the amount of Chlorine being added to your pool and so the same amount per hour is added regardless of whether the pool is being used or not. This means that they cannot react to bather load and or Chlorine breakdown as a result of sunlight exposure or add more Chlorine following a rainstorm (on an outside pool). Furthermore, Chlorine dispensers use stabilised chlorine tablets which contain cyanuric acid.
Cyanuric acid is an additive to help prevent the Chlorine being reduced through exposure to sunlight. However, too much Cyanuric acid in a pool is not desirable as it begins to stop the Chlorine from actually working as a disinfectant. This is why some pool owners find their pool starts to go green or cloudy even when their test kits tell them there is sufficient chlorine present. The cyanuric acid levels have reached a point where the chlorine can no longer do its job.
The only way to remove cyanuric acid is to change the water in the pool, something many people would rather avoid especially if they have spent money getting it up to temperature for the season.
The Hanna BL121 Chlorine Controller works differently. It reacts in real-time to the chemical situation in the pool and can alter the amount of Chlorine added depending on outside factors such as rainfall and sunlight exposure and to bather load. If the pool is not in use the amount of Chlorine needed is low, whereas if the pool is used with a high bather load the pool immediately requires more Chlorine to compensate and the Hanna BL121 automatically adds exactly the right amount of Chlorine to maintain optimum levels.
In addition to Chlorine the Hanna BL121 also controls the pH of the pool and will automatically add pH minus as your pool pH increases. It also includes a dosing consent feature that only dispenses chlorine when the pool’s pH level is correct. This feature saves money as the controller will only add Chlorine at the point the Chlorine is most effective plus it means you don’t have to constantly check and adjust the pH of your pool.
Pool parameters (including temperature) are shown on an easy-to-read backlit display and the Hanna BL121 also stores the readings every 15 minutes into memory thus providing a record of the pools pH, Chlorine and temperature readings. The Hanna 1-2-1 Chlorine Controller gives real transparency about the pH and Chlorine levels in your pool, so you can be certain that it is always safe and ready to swim in.
